Introduction to Claude Code

By DevShelfHub

Welcome to the complete Claude Code tutorial series. By the end you will go from your first install and commit to running sub-agents, connecting MCP servers, automating reviews in CI/CD, building custom agents with the SDK, and designing repositories that AI can work in autonomously.

Introduction to Claude Code tutorial — 25-part series from install to AI-native development

What is Claude Code?

Claude Code is Anthropic's agentic coding tool — not a line-completion autocomplete, but a full project-level AI engineering partner. It reads your entire codebase, edits files across multiple directories, runs shell commands, manages git, integrates with CI/CD, spawns parallel sub-agents, connects to external tools via MCP, and operates across the terminal, desktop app, VS Code, JetBrains, the browser, and Slack — all from natural language.

One-line version: Claude Code is a development partner you delegate to, not a chatbot you query.

Autocomplete vs. agent

Code completion

Sees one file and suggests the next line. You stay in the driver's seat for every keystroke and every decision.

Claude Code

Reads the whole project, plans across files, executes changes, runs tests, and iterates on failures. This isn't autocomplete — it's delegation.

Prerequisites

  • Comfort in a terminal (macOS, Linux, WSL, or Windows)
  • A working understanding of git — branches, commits, diffs, PRs
  • A Claude subscription (Pro/Team/Max/Enterprise) or an Anthropic API key
  • A real code project to experiment in — not a toy example

Note: The first few pages are conceptual and setup-focused. From Page 4 onward you'll be in a live session making real changes.

What you will learn

By the end of this 25-part series you will be able to:

  • Install Claude Code and complete real tasks in a live session
  • Master the agentic loop: gather context → take action → verify
  • Write CLAUDE.md, skills, and hooks that shape how Claude works
  • Run parallel sub-agents and worktrees without context collision
  • Connect external tools with MCP and build your own MCP server
  • Automate PR review and issue triage in GitHub Actions and GitLab
  • Build custom agents with the Agent SDK and deploy them in production
  • Design AI-native repositories that agents can maintain autonomously

Series overview

Here is everything covered across the 25 pages:

1

Introduction ← You are here

Overview, prerequisites, and what you will build.

2

What Is Claude Code?

Why an agentic coding tool is different from autocomplete, the agentic loop, and choosing your surface.

3

Installation & First Session

Install on macOS/Linux/WSL/Windows, authenticate, and complete your first real session and commit.

4

The Agentic Loop in Practice

Gather context → take action → verify. Interrupting, steering, and the four permission modes.

5

Exploring Unfamiliar Codebases

Get the big picture, find specific code, and understand patterns before you change anything.

6

Making Safe Code Changes

Plan mode, checkpoints, diff review, and committing safely with confidence.

7

Git Workflows with Claude Code

Branch → edit → commit → PR. Commit message crafting, PR descriptions, and merge conflict resolution.

8

Test-Driven Workflows

Write tests for legacy code, do TDD with an AI partner, and fix failing suites autonomously.

9

CLAUDE.md — Your AI Constitution

Write effective CLAUDE.md files, the loading hierarchy, path-specific rules, and team deployment.

10

Skills — Repeatable Workflows

Package context and instructions into named workflows. Frontmatter, dynamic context, and skill libraries.

11

Hooks — Automating Claude's Actions

Run shell commands at PreToolUse, PostToolUse, SessionStart, and Stop for formatting and quality gates.

12

Sessions & Context Engineering

Resume vs fork, naming sessions, the context cost hierarchy, /compact, and parallel worktrees.

13

IDE Integration: VS Code & JetBrains

Inline diffs, @-mentions, plan review, the built-in IDE MCP server, and CLI vs IDE trade-offs.

14

Automation & Non-Interactive Mode

claude -p, piping data in, shell orchestration, structured output, and test-fix loops.

15

Large-Scale Refactoring

The explore-plan-execute framework, safe refactoring patterns, and keeping tests green throughout.

16

MCP — Connecting Claude to Everything

Install local stdio and remote HTTP/SSE servers, scopes, OAuth, and MCP tool search.

17

Sub-Agents & Parallel Work

Custom sub-agents, Agent View, parallel patterns, and worktrees for true branch isolation.

18

CI/CD: GitHub Actions & GitLab

Automate PR review and @claude mentions, with Bedrock/Vertex auth and CI security patterns.

19

Routines — Autonomous Automation

Scheduled, API, and GitHub-event triggers running on managed infrastructure while you sleep.

20

Agent Teams

Lead + teammate architecture, quality gates, and avoiding multi-agent failure modes.

21

Building Custom MCP Servers

Expose tools, resources, and prompts; package as a plugin; submit to the marketplace.

22

Advanced Prompt Engineering

The anatomy of an effective agent prompt, verification-first patterns, and interview mode.

23

The Agent SDK

Build fully custom agents with programmatic tool access, orchestration patterns, and event streaming.

24

Production Deployment Patterns

Secrets, audit trails, spend controls, security hardening, observability, and designing for failure.

25

AI-Native Development

Design repositories agents can work in autonomously, recursive improvement loops, and team enablement.

Claude Code Tutorial FAQ

What is Claude Code?

Claude Code is Anthropic's agentic coding tool. Unlike autocomplete, it reads your whole project, edits files across directories, runs commands, manages git, and verifies its own work across the terminal, IDE, desktop, web, and Slack.

Is this Claude Code tutorial series free?

Yes. The entire 25-part DevShelfHub Claude Code tutorial series is free to read. You only need a Claude subscription or an Anthropic API key to follow along in a real project.

Do I need to know how to code to follow this series?

You should be comfortable in a terminal and understand git basics such as branches, commits, and pull requests. You don't need to be an expert, but a real code project to experiment in helps far more than a toy example.

What will I be able to do after finishing the series?

You'll be able to install Claude Code, master the agentic loop, write CLAUDE.md, skills, and hooks, run parallel sub-agents, connect MCP servers, automate reviews in CI/CD, and build custom agents with the Agent SDK.

How is Claude Code different from Claude.ai?

Claude.ai is a general chat assistant, while Claude Code is built for engineering work. Claude Code reads your codebase, runs tools, and executes multi-step tasks rather than just answering questions.

Quick summary

  • Claude Code is an agentic engineering partner, not autocomplete
  • It works the same agentic engine across terminal, IDE, desktop, web, and Slack
