What is NotebookLM?
NotebookLM is Google's source-grounded AI research assistant. Upload documents — PDFs, Google Docs, YouTube videos, web links — and ask questions. The AI responds using only information from your sources, and always cites which source it's quoting.
It is fundamentally different from ChatGPT or Perplexity. Those tools try to be universal knowledge sources. NotebookLM is hyper-focused: it knows only what you give it, and that constraint is its superpower — perfect accuracy within your documents, zero hallucination from outside knowledge.

Honest limitations
These constraints are fundamental to how NotebookLM works — not bugs:
- No internet access — cannot fetch current information or cite live web content. Only your uploaded sources.
- Source quality = output quality — poor-quality scans or very dense PDFs may reduce extraction accuracy.
- No real-time collaboration — you can't simultaneously edit a notebook with teammates (read-only link sharing exists).
- Audio Overview can oversimplify — on highly technical docs, the podcast summary may lose nuance.
- Context window limits — very large notebook libraries (50+ documents) can hit token limits on some queries.
